Our Process

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.

Unlike conventional liquid paint, which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light. The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a thick, tough finish that is more durable than conventional paint.

Precision and Perfection

Utilizing the Excel 2000Powder Spray Booth, we create beautiful, high-quality powder coatings with efficiency. This top of the line machine employs several different systems.

Steps

Pre-Treatment

Removal of oil, dirt, lubrication greases and metal oxides, is essential prior to the powder coating process. At Knickerbocker, our high-pressure power wash is highly successful at removing all impurities from the subject material before they are coated.

Powder Application

After the cleaning process is complete, the material makes its way into the powder application tunnel by an automated conveyor system. Once inside, powder is applied to the object using an electrostatic gun. The gun imparts a negative charge to the powder, which is then sprayed towards the grounded object by compressed air by a powerful electrostatic charge.

Curing

After the finish is applied, the material is sent through our high efficiency furnace. The powder begins to melt, flows out, and then chemically reacts to form a higher-molecular-weight polymer in a network-like structure. This cure process, called crosslinking, requires a certain temperature for a certain length of time in order to reach full cure and establish the full film properties for which the material was designed.

Benefits

Advanced Catridge-filter Technology

With the Encore® spray guns and fresh powder feed system, our machines can apply powder coating to even the most uniquely contoured parts with ease.

Collector Module with Improved Airflow

Our combination of high flow exhaust fans, anti-static delivery hoses, and HDVL® pump station allows for material conservation and faster transfer passes.

Aerodynamic Canopy Design

Larger spray booths offer enhanced lighting, as well as more load space and easier cleaning without sacrificing powder spray coverage.

Fast Start-Up & Easy Operation

Projects can be completed efficiently and safely with pneumatic and electrical control panels handling minute changes and monitoring.
